Founded by Wilhelm Reutter in 1906, the Reutter Carosserie-Werke Company originally made limousine bodies in the 1920s, with production of Volkswagon Beetle bodies and Porsche bodies in the 1930s and 1950s respectively.

With a decline in specialist motor bodies and manufacturers making their own bodies in the 1950s the Reutter Company fell on hard times and in 1963 Porsche took over the car building factory.

The remainder of the Reutter Company renamed itself Recaro GmbH & Co (The name coming from RE-utter CARO-sserie) and changed its focus to producing top quality seats for Porsche vehicles. The main production line being for Porsche cars, with another line for seats which could be fitted into any car.

In 1970 Keiper, a competitor of Recaro acquired a third stake in the company with Keiper gaining a majority stake in 1983. The company is now known as Keiper Recaro GmbH & Co.

Today Recaro make OEM seats for Aston Martin, Audi, Ferrari, Ford, GM, Honda, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Mazda, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Renault, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota and Volkswagen.

They also make a number of seats for aftermarket fitment as well as motor sport applications with seats made of carbon fibre as well as traditional materials.

Recaro are known throughout the world for their racing seats, with uses in a variety of race series from the World Rally Championship, through GT Car racing down to Go-Kart racing. The quality and safety of Recaro seats makes them the first choice for driver and team alike.

As well as the motor sport, aftermarket and OEM supplies, Recaro now supply Child seats built around their racing seat technology, meaning your child can have a stylish seat with Recaro's proven safety record.

Recaro have also made seats for the airline industry since 1969 with seats supplied to airliner manufacturers Airbus and Boeing and major airlines such as ANA, American Airlines, Air France, JAL, Qatar, KLM, Lufthansa, SAS, PIA, and many more. With this part of the seating business Recaro have also branched out and also supply stadium seating, office chairs and the latest Japanese Bullet "Shinkansen" is also fitted with Recaro seating.
